Girls Lax: Langley Defeats South Lakes

Langley 20
South Lakes 1

Langley’s fab five celebrated Senior Night with a 20-1 victory against the Seahawks.  The Lady Saxon Clan honored their seniors: Jillian Canning (4 years); Natalie Dolan (3 years); Megan Link (1 year); Elspeth McGarry (4 years); and Mary Riley Pembroke (4 years); for their dedication and service in making the Langley Lax program a perennial power in Virginia.

The Saxons came out on this emotional night and demonstrated why they are  ranked #5 in Virginia by laxpower.com by quickly exploiting the Seahawks’ inexperience. Leading the onslaught Elspeth McGarry scored four  times and made sure her teammates had ample opportunities with six assists. Jill Canning added three goals of her own to help the cause.  Underclassman, Margo Swomley continued her exceptional play with five goals and two assists.  Some of Langley’s younger players also found the net, with sophomores Mary Redmond (2 goals), Caroline Mahoney (1 goal), Nicky Pritchett (1 goal), Kelly Martins (1 goal), and Anne Frances Davis adding a goal of her own to the tally.

The Saxon defense proved as stingy as usual, with goalie Megan Link stymieing the Seahawk’s every shot to guarantee a controlling 11-0 lead. Junior Kentyn Kaplan, with help from sophomores Devon Clark and Anna Helmer, organized a frenzied  freshman defense consisting of Amy Garrigan and Grace Goettman that conceded one second half South Lakes goal.

Unfortunately, the Saxons’ celebration was without an integral part of their team; junior Torrie Zarella was away attending the funeral of her beloved grandfather. The whole Saxon squad’s thoughts and prayers were with Torrie and her family.

Coach DeSomma said, “It was a wonderful evening, giving tribute to all the hard work and dedication these girls have contributed to continue the vaunted Langley lacrosse tradition. I’m sure it is a night that our seniors will always remember. I would like to thank the girls and all our parent involved for making it a memorable night.”
