Volleyball: Lee v. West Potomac – October 2, 2012

Submitted by Lee Volleyball

Lee won a thrilling five-set match against the visiting West Potomac Wolverines, 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 15-13. The Lancers got off to a fast start taking the first two sets relatively easily, thanks to the steady setting of Fernanda Rojas and Jazlyn Alexander, the senior leadership of Yasmin Alexander and Sophia Okorn, the continued improvement of Hayley Knapp in the front row – paired with the back court passing and serving of defensive specialist Lindy Willer. Lee lost some momentum and the next two sets as West Potomac changed their attack, rolling shots to the corners and tipping to the middle. That set up the deciding fifth set. Lee got off to a very strong start, leading 6-1 and 13-7 before tightening up and allowing the Wolverines to tie the set at 13. Yasmin Alexander led the offense with 12 kills. Sophia Okorn had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Hayley Knapp tapped down five kills from the middle and had 4 solo blocks. Lindy Willer led the team with 6 digs, while setters Fernanda Rojas collected 11 assists and Jazlyn Alexander had 8. Despite the letdown in the middle of the match, the coaches feel like that was Lee’s best overall performance of the season. Next, the Lancers travel to Mt. Vernon on Thursday.

Volleyball: Robert E. Lee v. Annandale – September 24, 2012

Submitted by Robert E. Lee Volleyball

The Lancers were roughed up on the road at Annandale, losing in straight sets to the much-improved Atoms 21-25, 14-25 and 17-25. Lee seemed out of sync from the very beginning. The Lancers were in a position to win the first set after shaky play and missed serves from both teams, but while Annandale got on track, closing out the first set, Lee continued to struggle. Senior outside hitter Yasmin Alexander led the Lancer offense with six kills and two service aces. Junior Fernanda Moco was a bright spot off the bench, leading the team with four digs and junior middle hitter Jina Nkrumah continued her improvement with two aces and several good plays that didn’t show up in the stat sheet. Senior middle hitter Sophia Okorn had two kills, two aces, four digs and one solo block, while senior setter Fernanda Rojas handed out seven assists, had three digs and two kills. The Lancers hope to turn things around when they host Edison on Thursday.

Volleyball: Robert E. Lee v. Washington-Lee – September 13, 2012

Submitted By R.E. Lee Volleyball

Moral victories stink because they still count as a loss, but Lee played by far its best overall match of the season. The Lancers fell to the visiting Washington-Lee Generals 20-25 / 25-23 / 13-25 / 17-25. The first set left the fans in the gym thinking what could have been. The Lancers got off to a fantastic start, building and holding a lead of 20-18, that’s when the team started playing “not to lose,” abandoned the aggression that got them there and gave up 7 straight points to lose the first set. But they didn’t stay down for long, storming back to take a thrilling 25-23 victory in set 2. Then the Lancers built on that momentum starting set 3 with a 7-0 run before slowly letting the Generals creep back into the game. Washington-Lee went on to wear down the Lancer defense with their jump float serves, tips and quick hits, but Lee never gave up, getting valuable contributions from starters and role players off the bench all night long. Junior setter Jazlyn Alexander played the best match yet of her young varsity career. She led the team in aces with 3, handed out 6 assists, had 4 digs and 3 kills of her own. Her sister senior outside hitter Yasmin Alexander had 4 kills and 2 aces. Senior setter Fernanda Rojas had 7 assists and 4 digs. Senior middle hitter Sophia Okorn led the Lancer attack with 6 kills but she had plenty of help – from the Alexander sisters and from middle hiiters Hayley Knapp and Jina Nkumrah, who each tallied 2 kills and played great in the front row. The Lancers lost a tough one, but their coaches are proud of the effort and hope to build on that intensity and aggressiveness as Lee hits the road Tuesday and travels to Jeb Stuart.

2012 Northern Region Volleyball Preview

One of the best things about the fall is that Northern Region High School Volleyball resumes, and one of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind who follows the sport in this area is whether the Stone Bridge Bulldogs, who have won back-to-back Northern Region titles, can win three in a row. The Bulldogs have a lot of returning talent including 2011 Northern Region Player of the Year and First Team Virginia AAA All-State Outside Hitter Ryan Ackermann, and Honorable Mention All-State Libero Sarah Fairchild. Moreover, junior Libby Haslett has really stepped up her play for the Bulldogs this season.

In addition to Stone Bridge, there are a number of other exciting teams to watch in the area, and coaches in the Region have relayed that they expect a number of teams to be ones to watch this season including Langley, Oakton, South County, Woodson, and Yorktown. A team that appears to be one to keep your eyes on is South Lakes. The Liberty District is an extremely tough place to play, however, the Seahawks have some fun outside hitters to watch including Annemarie Bresson, Dory DeWeese, and Cloe Traylor.
