Article Submitted

The Herndon wrestling team just wrapped up a busy week of wrestling. On Wednesday, Jan. 23, the Hornets hosted a double dual meet against West Potomac and district rival Robinson. Herndon dropped both matches, losing to West Potomac 21-46, and fourth-ranked Robinson 15-56. Freshman Alex Rus (103) and sophomore Josh Pike (112) went 2-0 for the day.

On Friday, January 25, the Hornets traveled to Westfield to compete in a quad against Fairfax, Stone Bridge, and host Westfield. Herndon hung tough with the No. 7 Fairfax, but ultimately fell 25-49. Josh Pike pulled a major upset, defeating the No. 2 ranked wrestler, Jake Cox, via pin in the second period. Other key district wins came from Alex Rus, juniors Nick Zeigler (130), Matt Medvene (140), and James Neville (215).

Herndon then dominated Stone Bridge 49-16, in their second match of the night. Recording victories for the Hornets were Alex Rus, Josh Pike, Nick Ziegler, sophomore Matt Olem (135), Matt Medvene, sophomore Dan Shull (145), junior Fraser Trotter (160), James Neville and sophomore Kirk Nguyen (HWT). Herndon took 7 of the 9 matches they won via pin.

In their final match of the night, the Hornets faced No. 1 ranked Westfield. Westfield proved they were the team to beat in the Northern Region, by delivering a lopsided 75-3 win over Herndon. Freshmen Alex Rus came away with Herndon’s only victory, a 6-1 decision over Gavin Seltzer. Rus is currently undefeated in the district.

In their final meet before districts, Herndon will host cross-town rivals South Lakes and Chantilly in a tri-meet on Thursday, January 31. Herndon and Chantilly are set to do battle at 6 p.m. Chantilly will compete against South Lakes in the second round, and Herndon and South Lakes will match in the final match for the main event.
