Girls Lax: Langley Beats Woodson

A low ghostly sky accompanied by its eerily silent sister fog, shrouded the scene more befitting the backdrop for a production of Macbeth, than the thrilling play between the Langley Lady Saxons (7-2 ) and their arch rival, the Woodson Cavaliers (4-2).
 
When play concluded, the Lady Saxons bewitched their adversary by plopping 17 goals into the cauldron.  The Cavaliers managed to cast in just 10 of their own.
 
The Saxons set the tone early with spellbinding contributions by junior Torrie Zarella and sophomore Margo Swomley, each with 4 goals and 3 assists on the night.  Also contributing mightily to the opening cause was the magical play of fellow sophomore Nicky Pritchett who added 3 goals and was a nightmare on defense for the Cavaliers.
 
The Langley defense played every bit as well causing much bubble, bubble, toil and trouble for their nemesis Woodson who managed only 3 goals in the first half. Senior co-captain, Mary Riley Pembroke who saved 57% of the Woodson shots on goal, helped assure the Saxons a commanding 11-3 half time lead before being replaced. Also contributing with stellar play was defensive midfielder Kelly Martins who draws the unenviable task of marking the opponents leading scorer.  It was largely due to her and the coordinated efforts of the "three sisters" senior co-captain Natalie Dolan, sophomore Macy Anderson, and junior Mary Beth Winston, that the defense for the eighth time in nine games has cast its spell, holding its opponent to their lowest goal total of the season.
 
In the second half the continued fine all around play of senior Jill Canning (3 goals, 1 assist) and co-captain Elspeth McGarry (2 goals, 1 assist) stemmed any Cavaliers' effort to challenge the Saxon lead.
 
When asked about the game, Coach DeSomma said, "We played a very good game against a very good opponent. I'm pleased to see continued improvement on both sides of the ball.  Our younger players are becoming more seasoned and playing with more confidence. If we had played Woodson earlier we might not have been this confident in our play.  I'm happy with our performance and all the hard work the girls have put in and I hope we continue to improve."
