ARLINGTON, Va. – The 2009 BIG EAST women’s lacrosse championship began a weekend of postseason action with a banquet announcing major award winners...
The Langley Ladies continued their winning ways against their Colonial hosts. The Saxon's jumped out early with the perfect shooting performance of sophomore Margo Swomley who went 5/5 on the night. Co-captain Elspeth McGarry added 5 goals of her own with 3 assists to power the Saxon offense. Senior goal keeper, Megan Link, made quick work of the shots Thomas Jefferson were able to get against a stout Saxon defense allowing only one goal and giving Langley a commending 8-1 half time lead.
Conceding nothing the Colonial's came out with renewed vigor in the second half. Playing more aggressively they won six draws and earned five free position shots and managed to pare the score 10-5. The Saxon's called a time out and immediately regained their composure and control of the match with another stellar performance from junior Torrie Zarella (1 goal, 1 assist) who won 5 draw controls. Helping to solidify the victory cause were sophomores, Ellie Glasgow and Kelly Martins each with a goal and an assist. Senior Jill Canning (1 goal) and Olivia Sisson (1 assist) played fine games using their speed to cause turnovers and generally keep the Colonials off balance most of the night.
The Saxon's who are ranked in the top 10 of the 120 Virginia schools recorded in laxpower.com will face a stiff test this Wednesday April 21st, when they host their arch rivals Woodson. Coach DeSomma said, "These two teams have a healthy respect for each other. Both coaches know that their schools represent some of the finest high school lacrosse in Virginia. I think both teams are looking forward to the challenge."
